317 days ago my husband and I bought our first house. We saved for a long time, and I mean really saved. We didn’t eat out, nights out with friends were a rarity and Netflix became our only monthly treat – and main form of entertainment!
At times it was frustrating, but totally worth it as one sunny day in April 2015 we went to view a house in a part of town I was desperate to live in. It is quiet, close enough to town to walk should we have one too many gins and where I grew up. After a quick 10 minute viewing, I was sold. My husband not so much and so began an intense afternoon of discussions. We scoured over the house details and after realising the houses potential, to my absolute delight we decided to put an offer in.
My goodness, what a tense phone call that was but luckily the seller had already moved out, and we were first time buyers so the owner accepted our significantly lower that the asking price offer. We were over the moon!
Our house buying process was much less stressful and faster than I imagined. Everything just seemed to happen on time, and 7 weeks after we viewed the house, we had our keys.
Literally every room in the house needed updating, which is a very daunting task but bit by bit we have worked our way through the downstairs with countless trips to B&Q under our belt and many hours spent online sourcing all we need. The house completely lacked style so we have tried to inject a bit of us into every room we do up.
Here is our transformation so far:
Lounge / Dining area
The next things we need to tackle are the kitchen, bathroom, our bedroom, turning our downstairs bedroom into an office for the days we both work from home and the final spare room. So it’s going to be a long and very expensive rest of the year. We are ankle deep in brochures and tile samples at the moment – which I am loving.
The garden is a whole other story, it needed so much work and we are pretty much finished. We’ve become quite the gardening savvy couple…but that is for a whole other post itself!
And so continues our house renovation journey.
